What is an ergonomic office chair?

The ergonomic office chair is the talk around offices lately. But what are they? Do the ergonomic office chair benefit us? Let’s look at a few things.

Ergonomics is the application of scientific information concerning humans in the design of an object. The ergonomic office chair, in other words, is a chair built with the natural position of the human body in mind.

In fact, the ergonomic office chair is just one way that this scientific application is put to the test. You will find that there are other items on the market that have been tried, tested and proven to help aid the body to be in a more stressless position. For example, the ergonomic computer keyboard.

The main jist of the idea behind this design is to incorporate elements including our anatomy, physiology, psychology and apply this to the design of a chair that will help you perform on task in a variety of environments. Comfort, safety and efficiency are the key considerations in the design.

Most of the ergonomic office chair varieties have options where you can adjust them to suit your body. This allows you to fine tune to provide the maximum comfort.

  • Casters & Base
  • Seat Pan
  • Backrest
  • Armrests
  • Seat Height
  • Chair Recline or Tilt.

The casters you choose should be determined by the floor type that will be under the ergonomic chair. The seat pan should be comfortable and fit your shape. It should generally be at least one inch wide than your hips and thighs on either side.

The seat height should be adjustable, although you can find them in a non-adjustable model. You will probably want the pneumatically adjustable one so that you can put it up or down while you are sitting rather than having to get off the chair to do so.

The lumbar support in the back rest is of utmost importance. You will want to ensure that the chairs have cushioned lumbar supports that can be adjusted up and down as well as forward and backwards to fit your shape perfectly.

As far as the armrests go, this is more a matter of preference. You may choose armrests depending on the tasks you intend to do while sitting in the ergonomic chair. If you do decide to get the armrests, you will want to ensure they are broad, cushioned and comfortable and adjustable.

As you can see, there are a few things to consider. You will probably want to compare a few of the manufacturers. Each will have their own pricing and features that are worth comparing.

Some of the brands available include:

  • Herman Miller
  • Steelcase
  • Humanscale
  • Interactive Health
  • Turnstone
  • BackSaver
  • Bodybilt
  • Tract
  • Panasonic.

The ergonomic chair is available in a few different materials as well. You may find them in:

  • Fabric
  • Leather
  • Nylon
  • Vinyl

Each of these coverings will have its benefits. The vinyl ones are really easy to clean, but they don’t breath and if the chair begins to heat up under the thighs, it can be uncomfortable. Cloth is the most popular choice, but is more difficult to clean up. The leather ones are nice to the feel is the temperature is perfect.

There are also different types of seats to pick from, like: desk , executive, and stool. No matter which you choose, you want the end result to be a stressless chair to fit the body of the specific person.

We would recommend that you compare a few. You will find that the ergonomic chair is great for any office, call center, boardroom, business executives and the home office.
